Is satirical commentary the last challenge to the status quo?

When people get their news from Doonesbury and the Daily Show, with a dose of satire, doesn't this say something about the standard day to day news media of every type?

On the other hand, I guess it is better for people to get involved and try to learn from any outlet, than to be completely apathetic.

More on The Daily Show

A recent article stated that people who watch the daily show are more informed about politics than those who watch leno or letterman, or those people who only watch TV news or read newspapers.

A quote from the business-journal article by Dannagal Goldthwaite Young, a senior analyst at the Annenberg Public Policy Center who conducted the research, states “In fact, Daily Show viewers have higher campaign knowledge than national news viewers and newspaper readers -- even when education, party identification, following politics, watching cable news, receiving campaign information online, age, and gender are taken into consideration.”

I also recall a comment pointing out that Bill O'Reilly called daily show viewers stoned slackers. I guess we stoned slackers are more in touch with politics and what is going on.
